The Best Smartphone Cameras for Taking Perfect Pictures

Selfies, social media and the rise of instant fame means you need a quality smartphone camera. Additionally, with mobile phone technology advancing at immense speed, even photography professionals are buying into premium smartphone cameras.

With high definition and the ability to use photo-shop style apps, automatic flash, night vision etc. your pictures can look as good as, if not better than some well-known photographers’.  However, to get really picture-perfect images without adding an app, you need a superior smartphone camera.  Let’s explore the best smartphone cameras for taking perfect pictures.

Before rushing out to buy one, think about what you want in a smartphone camera.  Here are a few tips:

  • Do you want a camera that can take high definition images in dark places (night time for example or dark environments)?
  • Do you want a camera phone with a long battery life – particularly useful if you’re going to be out all day or over a long weekend
  • Do you want a small phone that you can carry with you easily or would you be happier with a bigger size model?

Bearing some of the above in mind, here’s a list of our favourite smartphone models available on the market now and each great for taking perfect pictures:

Samsung Galaxy 9

  • Android 7.1
  • 12 MP camera
  • 4K video recording
  • GHz octa-core processor

This is the latest Samsung camera phone and features a front and rear camera (rear dual 12MP and front 8MP). It’s also water resistant.  Similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 it boasts autofocus and is the lightest on this list at less than 200g.  Additions include biometric security, low-light performance and supreme power. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same phone as the 8. It also offers up to 256GB of storage.

One particular advantage is the phone’s excellent infinity display but the phone does have some negatives. Its speaker is weak and battery life (size 3,300 mAh) isn’t as good as other camera phones on the market.  The camera is really great for improving a photograph. It automatically sharpens the image so it appears crisper and it even transforms light when there’s a lack of it! The automatic setting is easy to get to grips with too, so you don’t have to fiddle around creating the best environment for your image.  See deals here>

Samsung Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8 Plus

  • Android 7.0
  • 8″ Quad High Definition Super AMOLED touchscreen
  • 12 MP camera
  • 4K video recording
  • 3 GHz octa-core processor

On of the best smartphone cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S8 was released in Spring 2017 and is a camera phone duo that boasts a rear camera (12MP) and front camera (8MP) along with a 3,000 to 3,500 mAh size battery and 64GB storage.  It offers a really superior camera experience plus easy to read screens but it has single sensors so portrait-focus isn’t as strong as landscape images.

Easy to hold, the S8 is a solid choice but if you want a larger screen size, the S8 Plus is better and has a longer lasting battery.  Great for selfies and the automatic settings really do create genuinely fantastic looking images that are sharp and colourful, even in dull environments which makes it one of the best smartphone cameras. • Android 8.0 (Oreo)
  • 6″ pOLED touchscreen
  • 12 MP camera
  • Snapdragon 835 processor

This is a relatively new piece of technology that was released in the Autumn of 2017.  The Google Pixel 2 (or 2 XL) and has a front and rear camera (rear is 12.2MP, front 8MP).  It weighs approximately 150g so it’s light to carry and has an impressive long lasting battery life.  This camera phone can also cope with up to 125GB of storage and is one of the best camera phones you can buy.

The software processing is particularly excellent – even if you take a picture that is distinctly average, it will automatically improve it.  With a single lens, the optical image stabilisation is exceptional.  The Pixel 2 XL gives you a larger screen and longer battery life – and both of the sizes are superb options for great imagery.  However, they are expensive at approximately £600+ (for the XL version).  Find Google Pixel deals and accessories here >>
