Nowadays, if you are looking to lose weight, there are literally thousands of diet plans available for you to choose from.  Each one comes from a different school of thought and has different pros and cons so knowing which one is the best is almost impossible.

The important things to remember are that 1) everyone is different so something that has worked for someone else, might not work for you and visa-versa and 2) you should always do some research into each diet plan and how it works before you follow it.

One of the most recent diet plans that has become increasingly popular is The 8 Hour Diet Plan.  This diet restricts eating times to an eight hour period, 9am to 5pm or 11am to 7pm, in order to boost metabolism by introducing fasting or ‘fat-burning’ periods.  If you are considering following this diet plan, here are some of its pros and cons to help you decide if it is right for you.

The positives

  • Having to fit all your meals into an 8-hour time frame will take careful planning which will help you become a more conscious eater. Mindless eating is a common downfall amongst dieters.
  • The concept of being able to eat whatever you like within the 8-hour time frame is a very appealing one. If we tell ourselves that we are not allowed something, it inevitably leads to us wanting it more.  Cutting this restriction out of the diet plan helps you to feel less like you’re on a strict diet and may also result in you eating more healthily.
  • If your last meal is at 5pm or 6pm, this diet will cut out any late-night snacking!
  • Rather than having to fight hunger pangs outside your designated eating hours, the diet allows you to eat high-fibre and high-protein foods such as yoghurt, nuts and vegetables. These foods are also healthy and nutritious.

The negatives

  • Being free to eat whatever you like during the 8-hour period can have its downsides. It allows you to consume as many calories and whatever type of food you desire which this doesn’t teach you about healthy eating, and could result in excessive calorie intake, which is detrimental to health and could actually cause weight gain.
  • Eating within a restricted time frame still instils the dieting mind set. If you feel like you’re following a ‘diet’, you’re less likely to want to follow it long-term.
  • This diet ignores the theory of calories in Vs calories out. If you eat more calories than you burn off, regardless of when you eat them, you will put on weight!
